13-14 September 2012

Thursday 13 and Friday 14 September 2012, the Critical and Cultural 
Theory Graduate School at Södertörn University will host an 
international symposium devoted to key issues in this dynamic and 
interdisciplinary field. Collaborating units include the departments of 
Aesthetics, Art History, Gender Studies, Literature, Media & 
Communication Studies, Philosophy and Studies in Practical Knowledge.

Ground-breaking work is needed to make the intersection between 
critique, culture and theory a fertile field of creativity and of 
struggle, crossing borders and drawing distinctions in critical 
dialogues. What does it mean to develop theory critically - and 
culturally? What do the legacies from Kant's critiques and critical 
theory imply for cultural research today? What new impetus have glocally 
diverse currents of critical cultural studies given to innovative 
theorisation in contemporary philosophy, aesthetics, art, literature, 
media and gender studies?

The term "fieldwork(s)" intends to express how the making of critical 
and cultural theory demands concerted efforts to develop creative forms 
of thinking, research and higher education that unite scholars from the 
range of disciplines and interdisciplinary areas. Initiated in 2010, the 
Critical and Cultural Theory Graduate School has built up a unique joint 
PhD programme that stands in the international forefront.

In order to manifest this will to field formation, we have invited 
international scholars to join us in discussing key issues for critical 
and cultural theory today. This symposium will present our Critical and 
Cultural Theory research area, offer glimpses into current lines of 
thought and offer ideas for the future directions of these intersecting 
fields. It will serve as a qualified arena for free discussion among 
leading scholars, introducing young PhD candidates into the field and 
inspire anyone with an interest in these fundamental topics to 
contemporary humanities.

Since the goal is to develop a shared understanding of some main 
directions in the field(s), there will be no parallel paper sessions, 
but we aim to have sufficient time for joint discussions linked to the 
plenary presentations. The first conference day starts by introducing 
key topics in the field, combining speakers from different countries. 
Each session is introduced by two specially invited scholars. The second 
day is filled by panel discussions around specific themes, leading up to 
a discussion of future prospects and plans.

The conference is supported by the Bank of Sweden Tercentennary 
Foundation (Riksbankens Jubileumsfond), the Swedish Research Council 
(Vetenskapsrådet) and the Graduate School for Critical and Cultural 
Theory at Södertörn University.

The event will be held at Södertörn University in Flemingsberg, 
Huddinge, in the southern part of the greater Stockholm area. 
Participation is free, but advance entry is demanded before 15 August 2012.

We plan to afterwards publish lectures and presentations in an anthology.
