Dear colleague,

We cordially invite you to submit a chapter proposal to be included in a forthcoming e-book, titled (provisionally) “Digital Literacy, Technology and Social Inclusion: making sense of one-to-one computer programmes around the world”, to be published in 2013. The call for chapters for this book is opened until January 20th.

In recent years, Governments all over the world have established policy agendas that seek to encourage and support the use of digital technologies in schools, promoting programmes known as ‘one-to-one’ (1:1) – one computer per child. Taking into account these policy programmes, this book is committed to:

- giving an overview of ‘one-to-one’ laptop programmes in different regions and countries in the world;

- discussing the educational policies programmes and agendas, of the country in question, associated with one computer per child initiatives;

- debating how the programmes ‘one to one’ were designed/conceived and implemented;

- critically evaluating the goals of those programmes and their execution, considering the advantages, limitations and potential of these initiatives for students, teachers, schools and society in general;

- shedding light on how the computer, and its resources, were integrated within teaching and learning practices and how children and young people use it, at school and at home;

- understanding how these programmes promoted the digital and media literacy of children and young people and how they contributed to their digital and social inclusion. We would like contributions for this book to take into account the diversity of social and cultural contexts of their uses and consider media and information literacy as the main framework of analysis and discussion.

This e-book is being prepared within the research project ‘Navigating with Magellan: Study on the impact of digital media in schoolchildren’ that is being carried out at the University of Minho, Communication and Society Research Centre, Portugal. The project is funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology [PTDC/CCI-COM/101381/2008] and co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund [COMPETE: FCOMP-01-0124-FEDER-009056]. Project’s coordinator: Sara Pereira, University of Minho. More information about the project here: http://www.lasics.uminho.pt/navmag/?lang=en).
