CFP: “From Hell’s Heart I Stab at Thee”: Style and Form in the
 Hollywood Slasher

While there is no lack of serious critical and analytic work on the slasher subgenre of horror, the work that does exist generally either selects texts outside mainstream industrial production frameworks, or uses the films to discuss their implications within cultural, sociopolitical, socioeconomic, or generic contexts. Theorists appear to evade engaging with Hollywood slasher films on their own terms, leaving a large gap in the critical analysis of a significant body of popular cinema. While genre theory has attempted to address consistent points of repetition within the slasher, it is rare to find work that shows how individual films within this strand of cinema are designed and formed in order to provide a unique emotional resonance to warrant their appearance as a singular text.

‘“From Hell’s Heart I Stab at Thee”: Style and Form in the Hollywood Slasher’ aims to fill this gap by engaging with these texts, either produced or distributed by major and mini-major Hollywood studios, which are geared towards mass distribution and consumption but developed with each having a unique stylistic and structural identity. In turn, this will draw out the evolution of mainstream slasher aesthetics since the inception of the slasher as a popular genre. Abstracts for possible contributions to this collection are being accepted on any film or group of films produced or distributed by major (or mini-major) Hollywood studios within any of the following four periods:

1.The Golden Years of the Modern Slasher, 1980-1984

2.Decline of the First Cycle, Extending the Franchises, 1985-1993

3.Returning to Formula, Self-referentiality, and Exploring New Territory, 1994-2002

4.Remakes, Torture-horror, and Getting Dirty, 2003-Present

Abstracts should be no more than 350 words, accompanied by a 150 word bio, and sent to Wickham Clayton, (wickscripts /at/ hotmail.com) <mailto:(wickscripts /at/ hotmail.com)> <mailto:(wickscripts /at/ hotmail.com)> no later than 30 September 2012.
