[ecrea] Symposium on Latin American Cinema
Wed Apr 11 14:52:16 GMT 2012
One-day Symposium: Revisiting *New Latin American Cinema *from its
Periphery: a Dialogue between Academics and Mario Handler
Date: 7th June 2012
Venue: *University of St Andrews*, UK
This event seeks to create a dialogue between academics, films and one
Uruguayan filmmaker. It will provide a unique insight into the Latin
American filmmaking reality of the 1960s and an exceptional opportunity
to watch some of Mario Handler’s films, with English subtitles.
This dialogue will promote new ways of understanding the characteristics
of production, circulation and exhibition of films made in smaller Latin
American nations, which have been traditionally overlooked by academia.
_Keynote speakers_
Prof. *Michael Chanan* (Roehampton) - "The Praxis of Political
Documentary in Latin America"
In the early 1980s, I filmed an interview with Mario Handler for a
documentary on New Latin American Cinema, in which he talked about
making /Me gustan los estudiates. /By comparing Mario's film with recent
versions of the song made by video activists of the student movement in
Chile, this paper will ask questions about the praxis of political
film-making then and now.
Dr. *Leshu Torchin* (St Andrews) - "Documentary and Activism"
