Call for proposals
Music in Silent Film
Routledge
We are putting together a proposal for a volume in Routledge’s Music
and Screen Media series. Proposals for chapters under any of these four
broad headings would be welcome:
1. Historical
2. Infrastructure & Technology
3. People: Composers & Practitioners
4. Case Studies
The editors would particularly welcome relevant contributions about
women’s work in the industry.
The remit of these volumes is to bridge the gap between Film Studies and
Film Music studies. Although very technical musical treatments are
avoided, some chapters in the series include music examples.
Routledge describes the series as follows:
“The scope of Music and Screen Media includes music in particular
genres of cinema, television, video games and new media. This Series
welcomes scholars from across the disciplines of music and film studies
… to propose edited essay collections that will be accessible to
students and scholars in the rapidly expanding field of music and screen
media.
Each book in the Series has an introduction by the editor and eight to
twelve original essays at approximately 5000 words each. The
introduction provides an overview of the genre of media under question
and also traces the general chronological development, highlighting
trends in musical styles and the composers most associated with that
media. The books will be small (circa. 250 pages), inexpensive, so they
can be freely assigned in the curriculum.
Proposals should include the following: a chapter title, a brief
abstract (150–200 words), and a concise curriculum vitae outlining
education, previous publications, and professional experience.
Deadline for proposals: 9 November 2015
