[ecrea] New book publication: Medieval Saints and Modern Screens

Mon Dec 04 21:19:31 GMT 2017

I’m delighted to announce the publication of my first book: /Medieval Saints and Modern Screens: Divine Visions as Cinematic Experience/, now available from Amsterdam University Press <http://en.aup.nl/books/9789462982277-medieval-saints-and-modern-screens.html> (AUP).

In /Medieval Saints and Modern Screens/, I bring theoretical perspectives from twenty-first-century media, film, and cultural studies to medieval hagiography. So doing, I stake the claim for a new methodological intervention: consideration of hagiography as cinematic media. Modern sources are drawn from a variety of pop-cultural media, including blockbuster movie /The Dark Knight/, Kim Kardashian West’s social media channels, and outputs of the immersive online environment Second Life. This material is placed in dialogue with the corpus of thirteenth-century Latin biographies of the “Holy Women of Liège”, and their visionary successors – in particular Margery Kempe.
