Call for Papers: Cinema and Media Studies in Translation

With courses on World Cinema (defined as the films and film industries 
of non-English speaking countries) and Global Media increasingly being 
included in the curricula of Film and Media Studies departments, there 
is a need for English-speaking students and scholars to have access to 
the outstanding critical studies published on international film and 
media productions. Many such texts are, as one would expect, written by 
nationals in their own language, which tends to invest them with a depth 
of cultural knowledge and insight that is hard to replicate by scholars 
who have been raised in a different culture and do not speak the 
particular language concerned. It is also the case that some of the best 
critical analyses of film and media are written in languages other than 
English, meaning that it is desirable for them to be made accessible to 
Anglophone readers.



Bearing these factors in mind, the Translation Committee of the Society 
for Cinema and Media Studies invites proposals for the translation of 
outstanding scholarly publications in languages other than English for 
inclusion in Cinema Journal. Journal articles, book chapters, or 
self-contained sections of a book that focus on a particular topic in a 
unified, coherent way are deemed appropriate for this purpose.



Proposals should include the following:



1.     The author, title, and publication details of the work being 
proposed (including the place, press, and date of publication).

2.     A statement identifying the significance of the work, and why it 
might be interesting to film and media scholars and students, SCMS 
members in particular.

3.     An indication of likely word length.

4.     The name and credentials of a prospective translator.

5.     The proposed date of submission (July 2015 for a 2016 publication 
date, subsequent submission dates will result in later publication dates).



Proposals are welcome for any work published in any language other than 
English, including, but not limited to, Asian, European, Middle Eastern, 
Latin American languages, and indigenous languages. A grant-in-aid of 
$1,000 will be paid to the translator to offset costs by SCMS. The 
scholar leading the project should provide an introduction laying out 
the importance of the author and the text. The total word count of the 
introduction and translated text should be between 8,000 and 10,000 
words in English. In some cases, projects (text and translation) of 
5,000 words will be considered (which case the grant-in-aid would be 
adjusted accordingly).



Due date: First round 15 March 2015. Further rounds will be announced 
throughout the year.
