For almost fifty years, Star Trek has been one of the most popular pop
culture franchises all over the world. Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, or the
famous android Data have all become cult figures. Million of viewers let
their imagination run wild by future technologies like beaming or
travelling at warp speed. There is no doubt: Star Trek is science
fiction at its best.
But what if Star Trek is not science fiction at all but a utopian text?
That is the central thesis of this book. However, can Star Trek be
compared to classic utopias like More or Campanella? Is there a certain
"Star Trek philosophy"? And: Does Star Trek actually shows a possible
utopian society?

In den fast fünf Jahrzehnten, die seit der Ausstrahlung der
Originalserie vergangen sind, hat sich Star Trek zu einem der
bekanntesten popkulturellen Phänomene überhaupt entwickelt. Captain Kirk
oder Mr. Spock, Captain Picard oder der Androide Data haben längst
Kultstatus erreicht und Technologien wie das Beamen oder der
Warp-Antrieb befeuern noch immer die Phantasien von Millionen. Keine
Frage: Star Trek gilt als Inbegriff von Science Fiction.
Genau dies zweifelt Sebastian Stoppe in diesem Buch an. Seine These: Bei
Star Trek handelt es nicht um eine Science Fiction-Erzählung, sondern um
einen utopischen Text. Aber lässt sich ein Film- und TV-Franchise wie
Star Trek überhaupt mit klassischen, utopisch-literarischen Texten
vergleichen? Gibt es so etwas wie eine Star Trek-Philosophie? Und wird
bei Star Trek gar ein utopischer Gesellschaftsentwurf gezeigt?
