Das Buch behandelt den Zusammenhang von sprachlicher Indexikalität und kultureller Identität bei 30 US Amerikanern, die von 1963 bis 2001 nach Deutschland eingewandert sind.
Die Forschungsfragen reflektieren einerseits sozial-konstruktivistische, narrative Ansätze.
Andererseits werden bestehende identitätsrelevante Kategorien vorausgesetzt, um linguistische Tendenzen bei der gesamten untersuchten Kohorte aufzudecken.
So werden Fragen aus verschiedenen Forschungsparadigmen untersucht,
Sozial konstruktivistisch:
1.Wie wird bikulturelle Identität durch Pronominaldeixis und Ortsreferenzen und  Origo in Deutschland konstruiert?
2. Wie wird Code-Switching als narrative Struktur für die Konstruktion  kultureller Identität verwendet?
3. Wie werden sozio-politische und historische Kontexte mit der eigenen Identität narrativ in Beziehung gesetzt?
Sprachvariation
4. Besteht ein Zusammenhang zwischen sozio-demographische Faktoren wie Alter, Geschlecht, Aufenthaltsdauer, sozialen Netzwerken, Beruf und Bildungsstand und Identitätskonstituierenden wie Pronomendeixis, Code-Switching und Muttersprachverlust?

Die Studie integriert somit verschiedene theoretische und methodische Ansätze. Das komplexe Thema Sprache und Identität im Immigrationskontext wird somit von verschiedenen paradigmatischen Blickwinkeln beleuchtet.

In which way can language be an indicator for cultural identity in immigration contexts? How are collective identity,
social networks and the use of the inclusive pronoun "we" connected? Does code-switching in additive bilingualism
and first language attrition indicate a loss of home cultural identity?
Designed as a longitudinal trend study, this book answers such complex questions. It investigates data collected
from interviews with thirty U.S. Americans who immigrated to Germany between 1963 to 2001. On one hand, indepth
discourse analyses take the discursive construction of identity through code-switching, narrative structures
and deictics within the sociopolitical context of Germany into account. One the other hand, quantitative analysis
of lexical attrition, code-switching and the 'we' pronoun show clear correlations with socio-demographic factors
such as age at arrival, length of residence, education, and English-related profession.
