*New Directions in Mediatization Research: Culture, Conflict and
Organizations*

International research seminar, October 1-2, 2015.

Mediatization research has now established itself as a prominent
theoretical framework and a field of empirical inquiry. The first wave
of mediatization studies was concerned with the study of mass media and
their influence not least on the political system. The second wave of
mediatization research has broadened the scope and considered mass
media, interpersonal media, and social network media in relation to a
wider set of social and cultural domains like sports, family and
conflict. In this intensive seminar we want to make a status of the
field of mediatization research at the same time as we would like to
look ahead and discuss possible developments and challenges, both
theoretically and empirically.

The agenda of this seminar is divided into three thematic areas within
which mediatization research has made recent contributions: Culture,
conflict, organization. A fourth theme concerns the status and future of
the field of mediatization research. Each of the themes will be
addressed by a series of keynote presentations. Furthermore, the seminar
includes a track with parallel sessions in relation to the different
themes. The four themes are elaborated below.

*Participation and papers: *

The seminar invites researchers to participate in this event, either as
ordinary participants or as contributors, i.e. paper presenters in one
of the parallel sessions.

If you would like to _contribute with your own work_, please submit an
abstract for presentation. We welcome proposals related to one of the
four seminar themes. Please send an abstract of 200-300 words to
Professor Stig Hjarvard ((stig /at/ hum.ku.dk) <mailto:(stig /at/ hum.ku.dk)>) no
later than _August 2nd, 2015_. Acceptance of papers will be communicated
shortly after the deadline. It is also possible to present a poster; if
you want to consider this possibility, please indicate this in your
proposal.

limited number of seats available and ordinary participation is granted
on a first come, first served basis.

Attendance is free. The seminar provides coffee, tea and lunch for
registered participants. A limited number of international participants
may have their hotel expenses covered by the organizers (max 2 days at a
designated hotel). Please indicate your interest in this when
registering. Preference will be given to participants presenting papers.

*The thematic areas of the seminar: *

·/Culture and everyday life/: Cultural domains like sports, literature,
family life, etc. are increasingly influenced by various forms of media
at the same time as media become integrated into the life-world of user
activities. Compared to the study of the mediatization of politics,
bureaucracies, and other institutions with a high degree of formal
organization and professional basis, the study of the mediatization of
culture needs to pay particular attention to the symbolic and life-world
aspects of mediatization processes.

·/Conflict/: The mediatization of various domains of society has
inserted new dynamics into the development and possible resolution of
conflicts. The media’s ability to amplify, frame and dramatize actions
as well as more generally to co-structure the course of events during
times of crises makes conflicts less predictable and containable. At the
same time new media have generally allowed more voices to be heard but
it is still an open question to what extent these voices have the power
to influence the outcomes of conflicts.

·/Organizations/: Organizations play a key role for the restructuring of
communicative practices and solidifying new patterns of social
interaction, and also often work as nodal points for different
institutional influences and pressures, including influences from the
media. In these processes institutional entrepreneurs often play an
important role in making media relevant for other parts of the
organization. The organizational level of analysis has proved highly
productive for the understanding of processes of mediatization.

·/Status and future directions/: During the last decade mediatization
theory and research has developed from a loosely connected set of
perspectives and analyses to become a field of enquiry with a more
coherent theoretical framework and agenda of research. Still, different
perspectives continue to inform the theoretical work and the growing
attention from still more researchers both inside and outside the field
of media studies push the empirical enquiry in many different
directions. In this section, we try to make a preliminary status of the
research field of mediatization and try to examine existing weaknesses
and future directions of mediatization research.
