*Special Issue on: ‘Al-Jazeera and Global Journalism’.*

Al-Jazeera has grown within few years from a limited Arabic speaking
news channel launched in 1996 and broadcasting from the small state
Qatar to a global network encompassing in its outreach a cosmopolitan
audience and one of the major competitors to the western global media
networks. The channel has been hailed to provide an alternative news
discourse to the global western news networks; a challenging journalism
practice to the traditionally held views of objectivity and
impartiality. It has also affected the global news flow between the
North and the South. In various parts of the world Al-Jazeera has been
credited for its daring journalism in covering the war in Afghanistan
(2001-02) invasion of Iraq (2003) and making governments accountable
before their citizens. In fact, one of the factors which have also
dramatically bolstered the Arab street’s loyalty (for instance) to
Al-Jazeera is its perseverance in covering political corruption in some
parts of the Arab world and its perceived genuine effort to give people
a voice. “The voice of the voiceless” is the motto which the channel
brands itself with regard to its unique reporting. Without Al-Jazeera’s
news reporting of the Tunisian, Egyptian, Libyan and Syrian revolutions
images of police brutality, torture and killing of opponents would have
probably never reached the international public opinion.

This special issue of the /Journal of Arab and Muslim Media Research/
aims to make a contribution towards the growing scholarship on the
Al-Jazeera phenomenon. It seeks to critically address the above areas of
enquiry and welcomes contributions based on original empirical studies
regarding (and not necessarily limited to) the following themes:

-Cross-country comparative studies on Al-Jazeera’s audiences

-Comparative studies between Al-Jazeera’s news coverage and the coverage
of other international news networks.

-Al-Jazeera’s reporting of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict

-Al-Jazeera and the Arab Spring revolutions

-The Arab street in Al-Jazeera’s coverage

-Al-Jazeera English VS Al-Jazeera Arabic

-Women in Al-Jazeera

-Use of new technologies in news reporting: Social media/drones etc.

-Al-Jazeera’s democratising role in the Arab region

-Objectivity and professionalism in Al-Jazeera’s news reporting

-Studies about Al-Jazeera’s genres

-Al-Jazeera’s impact on Arab broadcasting

-Al-Jazeera and diasporic audiences

-Recording history, the alternative discourse.
