Thu May 14 17:11:36 GMT 2015

*CALL FOR PAPER*

SISP (IPSA) – ITALIAN POLITICAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATION

XXIX Annual Conference, 10-12 September 2015

PANEL 5.2:*Collective action and connective action. (E-)participation
and civil society in the age of the Internet*

**

*Chair: *Luigi Ceccarini (University of Urbino Carlo Bo)

Papers, that will be discussed during the panel, deal with the
relationship among the Internet, political participation and citizens’
involvement.
Even taking into consideration all the problems that literature has
disclosed about the Internet and democracy, Web 2.0 technology offers many
opportunities for citizens to be involved in the political community.
Getting informed, discussing public affairs as far as participating in
online political
campaign and protest are actions regularly practiced by modern
democracies’ citizens.

The interlace between online and offline realms is at the base of
/individualised/ forms of e-citizens political engagement. In this
frame, which
connects the web on one side and the ground on the other, Internet - as
a resource for civic engagement - is used by citizens in many different
and /personalised/ styles, according to their expertise, creativity and
experience. In addition, according to the various moments of the public
life,
such as; electoral campaigns, social mobilisation, political protest and
so on, what emerges is a complex and fragmented participative scenario,
which is progressively more dynamic and changeable. Technology, in fact,
could be also considered a sphere able to quickly renew and modernise
itself, offering a windows of opportunity for civic and political
engagement.

In order to study this issue, the panel is open to papers that have a
different nature:

1. Theoretical and methodological, concerning the online/offline
citizens’ engagement;

2. Case studies research, embracing both comparative perspective or
works focusing on a particular country; online campaign, web-based parties,
civil society monitors and government watchdogs;

3. Pieces of research on social media which adopt various research
methods and technics: big-data analysis, e-citizens opinion poll,
e-activists
qualitative interview, social network website content analysis, etc.

Multidisciplinary approaches are welcome; the basic aim of this panel is
to offer a place of discussion among scholars who are interested in
the analysis of new forms of political participation, civic engagement
and on the change of the political culture of citizens in the age of the
Internet.
