Video games and apps that allow users to interact with each other were
considered just a curiosity forty years ago. But today they are two of
the most famed forms of entertainment and simulation methods. And they
have become dominant elements of the global culture. Because of the
ubiquity and evolution of the video game technology and the interactive
systems, we need to understand them not only as a commercial product but
aesthetic objects, learning contexts, technical constructions,
environment simulators and a cultural phenomenon. As users can interact
with content, video games become an important part of the digital
entertainment systems and they have a strong relationship with social
networks, virtual environments and mobile devices, among others. The
growing opportunities of the video games and interactive systems sectors
are appreciable: new technologies and devices availability, an
improvement of the use and consumption of video games habits, the use of
video games with a more formal approach such as the development of new
business models, the learning or simulation of cultural environments,
and the connection to social networks. Video games are one of the key
issues of the visual culture, understood this as a specific discipline
for analyzing and interpreting contemporary culture involved by art,
semiotics, anthropology, sociology, psychology and neuroscience.
