Gamification and Education Symposium
12th May 2015 University of Winchester
The School of Media and Film at the University of Winchester and the
Department of Media Art and Production at the University of Bedfordshire
are hosting a Gamification and Education Symposium on 12th May 2015 at
the University of Winchester.
The term gamification has attracted considerable attention in recent
years. Computer scientist Nick Pelling is thought to have coined the
term on his company’s website in late 2002 or early 2003 and since then
it has been increasingly deployed in numerous spheres becoming
widespread in late 2010. It refers primarily to an approach to enhancing
people’s experience of a service or system through incorporating
game-like experiences into the service or practice.
This symposium will explore some of the ways gamification is being used
in educational and training settings across different disciplines to
enhance student performance and engagement. Topics might include, but
are not limited to, the following:
· Game mechanics for education
· Game design for education
· Training design
· Assessment
· Engagement
· Progression
· Deep and surface learning
· Narrative
· Cognition and development
· Physical development
· Accessibility in the classroom
· Methods of studying gamification in education
· Ethical issues of gamifying education and training
· Researching gamified education
· Gamified educational metrics
· Case studies of successes and failures
Keynote to be announced.
The symposium is free to attend teas / coffees and lunch will be
provided to speakers and there are two competitively awarded (£100 each)
travel bursaries for PhD students. Unfortunately we cannot provide visa
support for international scholars.
Please send abstracts of no more than 300 words and a brief biography
indicating affiliation to Media Conferences
(MediaConferences /at/ winchester.ac.uk) by 5pm on Friday 27th March 2015.
Please indicate if you wish to be considered for the PhD student travel
bursary.
