The International Journal of Communication has just published its latest
Special Section on Media Audiences athttp://ijoc.org/index.php/ijoc. We
invite you to visit our web site to review articles and items of interest.
Contemporary media constitute an increasingly global, digital environment of
communication, but audiences remain geographically and culturally situated.
This special section presents empirical findings and methodological
implications from a comparative study of media use in nine European
countries. Europe—the European Union and the rest of the
region—represents a living laboratory of communication and culture. Often
thought of as one cultural unit, Europe, in fact, comprises a variety of
political and economic systems and a similarly differentiated set of media
systems. European media users, in their turn, are local cultural agents who
participate in, and contribute to, the ongoing structuration of their
societies. Documenting the current state of both “new” and “old”
media in Europe, the contributors to the special section go on to outline
potentials and perspectives for further comparative and cross-continental
research.
Audiences Across Media (guest-edited by Klaus Bruhn Jensen and Rasmus
Helles) is a special section of IJoC, that examines how audiences move
across multiple media and engage in multistep flows of one-to-one,
one-to-many, and many-to-many communication. Both media users and media
researchers gain new insight into current society and culture by observing
themselves in a comparative perspective.
