[ecrea] Journal of Screenwriting - first issue now available

Mon Sep 14 21:24:12 GMT 2009

?One constant truth emerges ? that the
evolution of a whole and consistent film
demands a rare, almost miraculous fusion
of many and various creative elements.?
? Lindsay Anderson, Director

Published by Intellect, the Journal of Screenwriting is a peer-reviewed journal for screenwriters, scholars and film fans alike.

This inaugural issue establishes the journal?s broad scope and rigorous approach, bridging the gap between academic theory and screenwriting practice. The auteur theory is challenged in articles that examine some of the most successful writer-director collaborations in film history, and we ask why ?the greatest Italian screenwriter? Tonino Guerra remains only a ?footnote?.

Contemporary issues facing those working in the screenwriting industry are also addressed, ranging from the practical (the effectiveness of the Screen Idea Work Group) to the theoretical (the relevance of Aristotle?s Poetics to the screenwriter). There is a historical analysis of the Danish screenwriting industry, and an examination of the trend in US independent film to dispense with the screenplay altogether. The Research Resources section discusses some highlights among the unpublished scripts in the BFI?s Special Collection, and finally the best new books on screenwriting are reviewed.
