Description
The Department of Arts of the University of Bologna, in collaboration
with Brown University, Dickinson College, and Wesleyan University,
invites applicants for the 2018 Mediating Italy in Global Culture Summer
School, to be held in Bologna (Italy) from June 18 to 23, 2018.
In its inaugural convening, Mediating “Italy in Global Culture” seeks to
work with a group of graduate and post-graduate students to develop a
set of methodological tools and materials useful for studying the forms
of distribution, circulation, and reception that “mediate” the Italian
audiovisual culture in other national contexts, primarily in the United
States. In addition to lectures and discussions of pre-assigned
readings, this week-long program will also give students the opportunity
to present and discuss their research with peers and faculty.
Lectures, meetings and seminars will focus on the mediatic
representations most commonly related to Italy, as well as on their
reworking by cultural industries, grassroots fandoms, and opinion
makers. The program will also explore the consumption of these
representations by not only general and mainstream audiences but also
those that are more targeted and defined. We will concentrate on the
intricate interweaving of film, television, and media products with
reference also to the ways that other cultural and industrial sections
(e.g., cooking, fashion, and design) play a role. For the ways it
popularizes and mediates the re-reading and re-framing of Italy’s
representation worldwide, the North American context – and especially
the US – plays privileged, pivotal role.
To get at the re-framing and re-circulation of the representation of the
“Made in Italy” audio visual products, lectures and seminars will
explore a variety of media, including:
Italian cinema (and its circulation in movie theaters, in festivals, and
on digital platforms);
Italian television (prestige series, specific formats, and animated
series for girls and tweens);
Transmedial phenomena (drawing on connections between fashion,
advertising, and photography to publishing adapted by cinema and TV
series, as in the cases of /Gomorra /or the work of Elena Ferrante).
Activities include meeting with /Gomorra /and /La mafia uccide solo
d’estate /head writer Stefano Bises and visits and guided tours to
institutions as Cineteca di Bologna and Fashion Research Foundation.
Students will present and discuss their ongoing research, with daily
workshops devoted to specific topics, perspectives, and media.

The cost of tuition and supplementary activities is 200 euros. Tuition
