[ecrea] CfP - Voices from Africa: Women's Online Spaces
Wed Mar 07 08:51:01 GMT 2018
*Call for Articles - Special issue of /Communicare/**//*
**
*‘Voices from Africa: Women’s Online Spaces’*
Web 2.0 offers ample opportunities for ordinary people to become mass
communicators. Even though not the panacea to address the unbalanced
North-South flow of information around the globe, or a ‘male
oriented-world’, the interactive platforms of the web offer women of the
Global South opportunities to create contra-flows of information through
mass self-communication and by creating other mass mediated messages via
the internet. Instead of being represented by others, Southern women are
presenting themselves online. This participatory turn that celebrates
the culture of interactivity and openness has witnessed many practices
where women use online spaces for working on identity, forming online
communities and fostering a sense of belonging.
Against this background, /Communicare: Journal for Communication Science
in Southern Africa/ invites articles for a special issue, ‘Voices from
Africa: Women’s Online Spaces’.
Articles drawing on a wide range of theoretical approaches and
methodological orientations are invited. As many online activities span
more than one interactive platform, articles are not restricted to one
platform (e.g. Facebook or blogging), but may investigate many platforms
(such as hashtags that often spans many platforms). Articles may
consider the following foci, but are not restricted to these:
·Sisterhood and virtual communities
·The blurring of online and offline communities
·Women’s issues and women’s identity
·Gender issues and intersectionality
·Unpaid women’s work, family and children
·Resisting and subverting ascribed identities
·Home, feeling at home, remembering home, imagining home: migration and
diaspora
Timeline:
·28 April 2018 – deadline for submission of articles
·Beginning of May – articles to reviewers
·End of July 2018 – feedback to authors
·Planned publication date – November/December 2018
Length of articles: 6000-8000 words
Reference style: Harvard method
