– Presentation of the event and scientific objectives:
After its 2016 conference in Paris, “Images of Community,” which 
interrogated visual representations (and the very idea 
of representability) of the common, and in anticipation of a future 
conference that will interrogate the rhythms, gestures and movements of 
community (2019), the CCC network (Community of Researchers 
on Community), in collaboration with the SFLGC (French Society of 
General and Comparative Literature), announces the call for papers for 
an international conference entitled “Communitas: Words of the Common, 
Words of Community,” which deals with the role of language (both 
in written and oral forms) in aspirations to community.

–Objective:
How of being together – what words can capture and transmit the 
experience? How can poetics express the effervescence of a community 
coming into being, and maintain this effervescence once this moment has 
passed? There is no doubt that the enthusiasm of being together breeds 
and stimulates a prodigious and creative verbal force. Chants of hope, 
poems, slogans, speeches, novels, films, and performances (among other 
forms of expression) manifest and communicate the outpouring 
resulting from the meeting of beings gathered in an organic entity that 
suddenly becomes aware of itself. This consciousness is lived with 
extraordinary intensity, and people very quickly feel the need to 
celebrate this excitement and wonderful sensitivity.

Our aim is therefore to analyze, in their multiple dimensions (in 
particular literary, aesthetic, linguistic, historical, 
anthropological and political), the verbal manifestations of community, 
both in artistic forms (poetry, theater, novel, but also 
possibly cinema, song, performance, etc.), and also outside of them – 
for example, aesthetic or linguistic analyses of the event and advent 
of community in calls, demonstrations, uprisings, revolutions, etc. 
would also be welcome. Presenters may focus on any period or culture, 
though our preference is for truly comparative perspectives, or 
perspectives that seek to theorize and generalize their results on the 
basis of particular examples.

–Possible topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- the different meanings of the word community ​​(historical and 
philological perspectives) and their consequences on the understanding 
of the notion;
- how do local, national and international communities compare?
- epics, legends and myths about the issue of Community production, 
yesterday and today;
- “common types”: which literary or linguistic forms are more apt to 
speak the Community and why?
- the words of the absent Community, disappointed attempts or hopes, 
more specifically within individualistic societies;
- Community and gender: masculine, feminine, queer communities...
- the words of communitarianism: narrow version of the common or form of 
contemporary vitality of communal affects?
- “communist” works (their ambitions, their failure and success, their 
limits)
- the common today, in the digital and transmedia era. The meaning of 
“communities” of users. Their relationship to the common.
- how to express a Francophone or Anglophone community, a postcolonial 
community?

The symposium will be held over two and a half days at the International 
Research House (MIR) of the Paris-Seine University on the Neuville 
campus of the University of Cergy-Pontoise (40 minutes from Paris on the 
RER A train).

Presentations (20 min + discussion) may be conducted in French, English, 
or Portuguese. Video projection equipment will be available. The 
conference is open to anyone wishing to attend. PhD students in 
comparative literature are particularly encouraged to submit a presentation.

Garrido (University of Lisboa) and Rémi Astruc (Paris-Seine University, 
Cergy)

Louis Nana, Mylène Charon, Abderrahmane El Yousfi, Sylvie Brodziak,

Colloque international CCC et congrès SFLGC 2018

–Présentation de la manifestation et objectifs scientifiques :
Après avoir organisé en juin 2016 à Paris un premier colloque portant 
sur les images de la Communauté qui visait à interroger les 
représentations et l’idée même de représentabilité du « commun » en 
images, et avant un futur colloque qui interrogera les rythmes, gestes 
et mouvements de la Communauté (2019), le réseau CCC (Communauté des 
Chercheurs sur la Communauté) s’associe avec la SFLGC (Société Française 
de Littérature Générale et Comparée) pour lancer un appel 
à communication en vue d’une manifestation internationale intitulée 
: Communitas[1]et portant sur l’examen des « mots du commun et de la 
Communauté », soit l’imaginaire verbal des aspirations à la Communauté.

–Argument:
Comment se formulent les idéaux ou les espoirs de la vie en commun, mais 
aussi l’épiphanie de la Communauté, son existence ressentie ? Comment se 
capture et se verbalise le sentiment d’être ensemble et quels mots 
peuvent en fixer puis transmettre l’expérience ? Quelles poétiques sont 
ainsi en mesure d’exprimer l’effervescence de la communauté en 
train d’advenir et d’en partager ensuite le souvenir ? Il ne fait aucun 
doute que l’enthousiasme communautaire engendre et stimule une force de 
création, notamment verbale, tout à fait prodigieuse. Chants d’espoir, 
poèmes, slogans, allocutions, romans, films, performances, sont là, 
parmi d’autres formes d’invention et d’expression, pour manifester et 
communiquer l’effusion à laquelle conduit souvent la réunion des hommes 
en une entité organique qui prend soudain conscience d’elle-même. 
Cette réunion se vit alors avec une intensité extraordinaire et les 
hommes ressentent très vite le besoin de célébrer cette excitation et 
sensibilité merveilleuse.

Il s’agira dès lors d’analyser dans leurs multiples dimensions 
(notamment esthétique, linguistique, historique, anthropologique et 
politique) les formulations verbales du sentiment de Communauté. 
L’enquête, qui trouvera à s’exercer naturellement dans les différentes 
formes d’art (poésie, théâtre, roman, mais aussi éventuellement cinéma, 
chanson, performance, etc.), pourra ne pas s’y limiter et aborder, mais 
sous un angle esthétique ou linguistique, toutes les productions 
verbales liés aux événements et à l’avènement de la Communauté ou de la 
vie en commun : appels, manifestations, soulèvements, révolutions, par 
exemple.

Cette enquête pourra se déployer dans les différentes époques et les 
différentes cultures, avec une préférence pour les perspectives 
véritablement comparatistes ou qui chercheront à théoriser et 
généraliser, à partir de l’examen d’exemples particuliers, les résultats 
obtenus.

– Parmi les innombrables pistes possibles, voici une liste non 
exhaustive de directions ou d’explorations envisageables :

• les différents sens du mot communauté en langues (perspectives 
historiques et philologiques) et leurs conséquences sur la compréhension 
de la notion ;
• comment se disent les communautés locales, nationales, internationales ?
• les épopées, légendes et mythes face à la question de la production de 
la Communauté, hier et aujourd’hui ;
• les genres du commun : quelles formes littéraires ou langagières sont 
plus aptes à dire la Communauté et pourquoi ?
• les mots de la Communauté absente, des tentatives ou espoirs déçus, au 
sein des sociétés individualistes ;
• Communauté et approche genrée, masculin, féminin, queer…
• les mots du communautarisme : version étriquée du commun ou forme de 
vitalité contemporaine des affects communautaires ?
• les œuvres « communistes » (leurs ambitions, leur échec et réussite, 
leurs limites)
• dire le commun aujourd’hui à l’ère numérique et transmédiatique. Le 
sens des « communautés » d’utilisateurs. Leur rapport au commun.
• comment dire une communauté francophone, une communauté postcoloniale ?

–Organisation:
Le colloque se tiendra pendant deux jours et demi à la Maison 
Internationale de la Recherche (MIR) de l’Université Paris-Seine sur le 
site de Neuville (95) de l’Université de Cergy-Pontoise (RER A direct, 
40 minutes de Paris).

Les communications (20 min + discussion) pourront se faire en français, 
anglais ou portugais. Des moyens de vidéo-projection seront mis à 
disposition. Le colloque est ouvert à toute personne désireuse d’y 
participer ou d’y assister. Les doctorants en littérature comparée sont 
en particulier encouragés à proposer une communication.
