Hold Still/Keep Going: Time and Memory in Contemporary Lens-Based Media
This session’s title deliberately references Robert Frank’s seminal book, Hold Still–Keep Going. The works included within this monograph emphasize Frank’s poetic use of the moving image and serial photography as a means of addressing the inherent flaws attached to the singularly captured photographic moment. The proliferation of digital technologies has allowed many contemporary artists to begin seamlessly combining still images and digital video or film within their practice. The works produced may incorporate a range of strategies from conceptual to formal, but most seek to question assumed understandings of time as re-represented in lens-based media. These notions inevitably lead to a probing of the theoretical implications of time and memory within these structures.

We are accustomed to moments or instants as being fixed within a still image, or reactivated within the moving frame. For these reasons, contrasting views of duration and continuity within a temporal framework are of particular interest, as are issues of indexicality, medium specificity, and hybridity. This session will aim to bring together a panel of working artists who address these issues and employ these techniques in their practice, as well as art historians currently writing on the topic.

Session Chairs: Dawn Roe, Rollins College, (dawnroe /at/ gmail.com) and Elisabeth Friedman, Illinois State University (efriedm /at/ ilstu.edu)
