[ecrea] Call for Papers: Detecting Detection in Modern Narrative
Mon Nov 02 06:48:49 GMT 2009
CFP: Detecting Detection: Reading Detection as Motif in Modern Narrative
Extended Deadline: January 15, 2010.
Apologies for cross-posting
What is detective work, and who might do it?
What needs to be detected, and why? How does the
narrative structure of detection function within
a larger plot? While a great deal of fruitful
investigation has been done on the detective
story, relatively little attention has been
given to the role of detection as one motif
among others?that is, to the accidental or
incidental detectives who appear so persistently
in literary works, who investigate matters that
may not even officially count as ?crimes. ? By
bringing together different instances of its
use, the collection will explore the current
meanings of detection as a narrative device.
 Investigations might treat, among other
possibilities, the role of detection in
constructing or articulating the following:
--gender
--identity
--melancholy
--militarism
--economic or environmental justice
--family
--sexuality
--race
--individualism
--genre
The collection will be edited by Peter Baker and
Deborah Shaller. Please send 300-500 word
abstracts by e-mail to
(dshaller /at/ towson.edu). Queries at the same address are welcome at any time.
