[Commlist] Report: Impact of Social Media Law on Media Freedom in Turkey

The Media Research Association published "Impact of Social Media Law on 
Media Freedom in Turkey Report"

After Social Media Law was amended in July 2020 and came into effect as 
of October 1, 2020, the Media Research Association monitored the law's 
impact on media freedom in Turkey for seven months. Research team 
-consisting of Gürkan Özturan, Dilek İçten, Hasan Berk Akkoç- received 
input from 35 media organizations which listed 658 news articles that 
were removed during the monitoring period.

Highest number of articles that were removed were news pieces about 
/corruption and irregularities in official processes /as well as those 
published on /abuse of authority/.

Among the sources of the takedown requests stood out the /businesspeople 
/and /ministers of the government/, closely followed by /high level 
bureaucrats/; most popularly cited reason for takedown requests was 
"/violation of personal rights/" of the complainants, which is a vaguely 
defined term according to the Turkish Penal Code.
