This new book on the concept of culture first traces the main notions of 
culture, analysing their histories, uses and contradictions.
Then follows an investigation of how the hermeneutic concept of culture 
as signifying practice or meaning-making mediation has been challenged 
by various posthumanists and neomaterialists, from Sontag and Foucault 
to Latour, Barad, Luhmann, Kittler and Gumbrecht.
Insights from such contestations are finally incorporated to update the 
critical-hermeneutic notion of culture by stressing the dynamic 
interface of meaning, mediation and materiality.
This should be highly relevant to all who are interested in cultural 
theory, cultural research and cultural studies.
