Thu May 11 21:39:54 GMT 2017
New book from Palgrave Macmillan
"The internet and formations of Iranian American-ness: Next Generation
Diaspora"
Donya Alinejad
This book is an ethnography of the uses of various web platforms and
applications by second-generation Iranian Americans living in Los
Angeles, the long-time media and cultural center of Iranian diaspora.
Investigating how practices of web use are embedded within everyday
social, cultural, and political life in LA, the book unpacks
contemporary diasporic belonging through its discussion of the digital
mediation of race, memory, home, and the historic Iranian Green Movement
of 2009. Its chapters are organized around each of these four themes,
with each showing how web media practices have become integral to
Iranian American identity formation for this generation. It argues for a
notion of "digital styles” to explain how specific web applications
afford new stylings of diaspora culture.
This book is based on the doctoral research of the author, who received
her PhD in Social and Cultural Anthropology from the Vrije Universiteit
Amsterdam, and is currently a postdoctoral researcher on the ERC project
“Digital Crossings in Europe: Gender, Diaspora, and Belonging” at the
Department of Media and Culture Studies at Utrecht University in the
Netherlands.
