Studies in Spanish & Latin American Cinemas issue 10.1

Intellect is delighted to announce the publication of Studies in Spanish 
& Latin American Cinemas, volume 10 issue 1. Formerly published as 
Studies in Hispanic Cinemas, this first issue since the journal's title 
change reflects the breadth of the journal's coverage. Thus, the issue 
includes articles and reviews that examine a range of films from 
Spanish, Brazilian, Cuban, Argentine and Mexican cinemas.



Maite Conde reveals how a new generation of female stars in 1920s 
Brazilian cinema together with women's consumer culture played a role in 
forging the Brazilian film industry. Thomas Deveny considers how 
communication facilitates character change in the Argentine film Un 
cuento chino, while Marilyn G Miller examines problems with 'truth' in 
the depiction of Caribbean slavery in both Cuban director Gutiérrez 
Alea's film The Last Supper, and in Italian director Pontecorvo's Burn! 
Similarly, the three book reviews assess titles that explore films from 
Mexican, Uruguayan, Peruvian, Argentine and Brazilian cinemas.


Four articles explore Spanish cinema of the Franco era. Alberto Medina 
investigates the Francoist politics of New Spanish Cinema of the 1970s, 
while Asier Aranzubia analyzes Carlos Serrano de Osma's last film, La 
rosa roja/The Red Rose from a historical and textual perspective, and 
Patricia Keller looks at cinematic time and depictions of loss in Carlos 
Saura's Elisa, vida mía. Finally, Erin K. Hogan sees Lucia's Tómbola as 
a vehicle for the political appropriation of children during Franco's 
regime, epitomized both in its storyline, which shows the wayward 
central child character being 'corrected' and converted to a model 
Francoist child, and through the treatment of Pepa Flores, the child 
star who played her, who was likewise forced into the role of model 
child for the regime.
