*THEME
*
*Transforming Film Festivals: Sustainability of Film Festivals
*
Film festivals are examined theoretically under many different headings
(http://www.filmfestivalresearch.org/
<http://www.filmfestivalresearch.org/>). Film festivals have been
affected by the changes in daily life practices: the pandemic, the
global climate crisis are the first ones that come to mind… These
interactions also determine our lifestyle and ways of doing business. If
we do not change our lifestyle with sustainable habits and do not adopt
sustainable ways of doing business, it does not seem possible to prevent
the global climate crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic is acting as a catalyst
for us to rethink this issue. The sustainability of the global festival
cycle has become debatable during the pandemic process. How do the two
main components of film festivals (films and festival) (Valck, 2020)
interact on the sustainability topic? In the global film industry, green
practices for sustainability in film production are becoming
commonplace. Within the global film festival cycle, some festivals are
also developing serious policies on sustainability. In this context, how
can film festivals make use of sustainability? What does a film festival
need to ensure sustainability? (Fischer, 2013) In the symposium, we will
try to establish the relationship between film festivals and
sustainability, which is generally defined as meeting the needs of today
without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own
needs. In a sense, we will talk about the future of film festivals.
Today, it has become a necessity to develop social, economic and
environmental policies for the sustainability of film festivals.
Therefore, it has been observed that it is easier for film festivals
that have developed their sustainability policies within the global
festival cycle to create their ecosystem. This symposium aims to bring
together discussions on the economic, social and environmental
sustainability of film festivals. In this context, we want to contribute
to the usability and importance of sustainability as a concept in film
festival studies. By approaching sustainability in an inclusive and
critical way, we can develop useful concepts and approaches for film
festival studies. The symposium focuses on the theme of sustainability
from a conjugation perspective, on the axis of transversality, within
the scope of economic, social and environmental sustainability.
Economic sustainability:
Sustainable film festivals and working practices; sustainable paradigms
in film festival management; sustainable financing and sponsorships;
sharing economy and film festivals; accumulation strategies of film
festivals; organization and corporate identity of film festivals; film
festivals, cultural economy and sustainability; film festivals as
cultural economies driving sustainable development; sustainability of
funding/pitching/forums; local contribution of film festivals within the
scope of cultural and creative economy,
Social sustainability:
Ecosystem of film festivals; the role of film festivals in social
development; film festivals as a social system; spectators/cinephiles
within the scope of social sustainability; developing the culture of
watching films in cinema for children and young people; development of
social interaction models; joint film festivals; access of disadvantaged
groups to film festivals; film festivals and anti-discrimination
policies; promoting gender equality, diversity and inclusion at film
festivals,
Environmental sustainability: greening film festivals
Green policies of film festivals; improving the carbon footprint of film
festivals; film festivals and the use of innovative energy solutions;
cooperation with partners that reduce carbon emissions; waste
management, recycling, energy and water conservation at film festivals;
cooperation with partners and associations with sustainable policies;
the role and function of film festivals in the development of “green
cinema” in the cinema industry; eco-friendly film festivals,
The International Film Festival Symposium focuses on the main theme of

also open to papers containing both empirical and theoretical approaches
and making an interdisciplinary reading on the following topics:

industry professionals.
The languages of the symposium are Turkish and English. The symposium
will be held face-to-face during the film festival. However, depending
on the process of the pandemic, it can also be done online. Information
on this subject will be shared in the future. Accepted abstracts will be
