It has been 70 years since the Japan Society for Journalism Studies started in 1951, and 30 years have passed since the name was changed to the Japan Society for Studies in Journalism and Mass Communication. Then, next year, it will be reborn as the Japan Association for Media, Journalism and Communication Studies (JAMS). With this opportunity, we expect to have a turning point to rejuvenate our research activities significantly.

An important axis for this shift is the dramatic changes in media technology and the globalization of research and academic networks. The development of global information networks does not constitute a uniform media environment. Each region creates a unique social communication style and media culture, defined by economic, political, and institutional contexts. In particular, the widespread circulation of media and popular culture and the challenges facing journalism in East Asia, including Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan, have attracted many researchers, including those from Europe and the United States. With the growing attention to the East Asian region, research cooperation and exchanges among researchers are becoming more active and important, while globalization is deepening even more rapidly in the fields of research and education. Under such circumstances, the Society's international research collaboration and exchange activities are steadily being carried out, including the Society's commitment to the Japan-Korea International Symposium, held up to 25 times since 1990. Nevertheless, further efforts are essential given the ongoing trends on a global scale.

At this international symposium, in addition to the keynote speech by Ito, Mamoru, the president of this Society, we invited researchers from overseas who have been engaged in research on the media situation in the East Asian region while working at universities in Hong Kong, Canada, and South Korea, respectively. They will talk about the research collaborations and exchanges they have been working on and the possibilities and significance of future research cooperation and interaction. Then, professor Hayashi, Kaori will share her experiences in international research collaboration and discuss the issues raised by the keynote speaker and panelists. Finally, we will deepen the discussion with all the speakers. This symposium will be held as a two-way online conference by Zoom with simultaneous interpretation in English and Japanese.
