Sat Sep 23 15:22:35 GMT 2017
*Discourses of the Ukrainian Conflict: Linguistic Creativity in the Time
of Crisis *
We invite submission of abstracts for a panel entitled “Discourses of
the Ukrainian Conflict: Linguistic Creativity in the Time of Crisis”, to
be proposed as a part of The Seventh International Conference on
Critical Approaches to Discourse Analysis across Disciplines (CADAAD
2018), which will take place 4-6 July 2018 and will be hosted by Aalborg
University, Denmark.
This panel welcomes contributions that highlight discursive practices
prompted by the situation of crisis and investigate the trends in
language aggression, framing, evaluation, persuasion, and other elements
of conflict communication from a discourse-analytical perspective. Since
the turbulent political, social, and military situation in Ukraine has
triggered an extraordinary upsurge in linguistic creativity, we are
especially interested in research that focuses on such innovation, its
causes, sources, and functions in various spheres of communication. We
hope the discussion will advance//the understanding of the relationship
between language, discourse, and society through highlighting the
complex interrelation of linguistic and extra-linguistic phenomena in
the time of crisis and through attention to the active and deliberate
communicative activity of the discourse participants.
We invite papers based on authentic discourse data in the public sphere,
especially in informal media, such as social networks, as well as in
traditional media; corpus-assisted discourse studies are particularly
welcome.
The papers may focus on a variety of topics, and may cover (among
others) such areas as:
* Conflict and aggression
* Power, oppression, or legitimation
* Identity construction and management
* Humor in the time of crisis
* Media and technology and their role in shaping discourses of crisis
* Narratives of political parties, institutions, or social movements
* Military action narratives
* Gender in crisis discourse
* Migration, integration, and discrimination
* History and memory
* Contested categorization, contested framing
* Nation, nationalism, and populism
* Health and mental health
* Business and economics
A range of approaches and different theoretical and analytical
perspectives are welcome, including but not limited to:
* Conversation and Discourse Analysis
* Corpus Linguistics
* Cognitive Linguistics
* Discursive Psychology
* Ethnography of Communication
* Forensic Linguistics
* Functional Linguistics
* Multimodality
