DiscourseNet 19 Conference

Bucharest, Romania
July, 7-8 2017

Keynote Speaker: Isabela Fairclough (University of Central Lancashire)
Distinguished Guest: Norman Fairclough (University of Lancaster)

Discourse Studies comprise a growing body of research which focuses on meaning making as a key activity in society: from a discourse perspective, social phenomena are meaningful phenomena. While discourse researchers insist on the role of ‘language’ (i.e. verbal and nonverbal signs) for the social production of meaning, they commonly point out the social, political, historical contexts in which it is used. Discourse Studies have dealt with objects as diverse as public controversies and classroom interactions, the social web, bodily gestures and urban landscapes. In these studies, discourse is never seen as a pure linguistic activity. Rather, it is intertwined with what people know and with what they do in society. Discourse, in other words, raises the question how language is related to knowledges and practices in society.

While some researchers have put emphasis on the knowledge dimension of discourse by asking how knowledge is produced, circulated and established in society, others have conceptualized discourse as a practice which performs social functions. DiscourseNet 19 welcomes contributions which analyse discourses in their epistemic and pragmatic entanglements. The participants come from all branches of the social sciences and humanities and bring their various theoretical and methodological orientations into a productive exchange. The presentations will deal with empirical discursive objects in a theoretical way and engage in a critical reflection of the nexus of language, knowledge and practice in contemporary society. They can be either in English or in French.
