[ecrea] Conference - Real Injuns and Real Indians : Trends in Native American Cinema - Sorbonne Nouvelle

Tue Mar 29 13:10:46 GMT 2016

Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, Institut du Monde Anglophone

Wednesday, May 4, 2016 - 5 to 7 pm

"Reel Injuns and Real Indians: Trends in Native American Cinema"

Dr. Jennifer Gauthier, Associate Professor of Communication Studies, Randolph College (Lynchburg, VA, USA)

Since the birth of cinema, filmmakers have been fascinated with “Injuns.” From The Searchers to Dances with Wolves, Hollywood has presented stereotyped images of Native peoples on the big screen. Beginning in the late 1990s Native American filmmakers began to take the camera into their own hands to challenge Hollywood’s representations. This conference will examine how Native America cinema constructs its own aesthetic, reversing the gaze and revising the cinematic image of Native peoples in America.

Dr. Gauthier teaches courses in media studies and rhetoric at Randolph College in Virginia. Her work on Aboriginal cinema in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand has been published in a variety of scholarly journals. In the fall of 2011 she served as Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in North American Society and Culture at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec. She is currently working on a manuscript about Aboriginal women filmmakers in Canada.
