16.5 Mediating Gendered State Violence
Recent months and years have seen the wide circulation of mediated
representations of agents of the state exercising violent force against
individuals. Police slayings of unarmed citizens are recorded by cell
phone cameras and distributed over the web. Surveillance footage
depicting prisoner abuse goes viral. Journalists capture images of
protestors being suppressed through the use of physical force. We are
seeking feminist analyses of the gendered nature of these and related
phenomena for an upcoming issue of Feminist Media Studies’ Commentary &
Criticism. As always, we are particularly interested in submissions from
beyond North America and the UK.

Possible paper topics might include, but are not limited to, the following:
•The use of digital/social media to circulate representations of
gendered state violence
•The potential gendered implications of dashcams, bodycams, and other
self-surveillance technologies used by the state
•“Audience” engagement with mediated representations of gendered state
violence, including remix and non-engagement (e.g. refusing to share or
watch)
•Feminist textual analyses of mediated representations of state violence
•Gendered aspects of mediated representations of state violence,
particularly in intersection with race, ethnicity, nationality, etc.
•Historical continuities and disjunctures in representations of gendered
state violence
•The state as distributor of gendered, violent media
•The state as censor of gendered, violent media
•Feminist mediated reactions/protests against state violence (e.g.
hashtags like #SayHerName)

The Commentary and Criticism section of Feminist Media Studies aims to
publish brief (~1000 words), timely responses to current issues in
feminist media culture, for an international readership. Submissions may
pose a provocation, describe work in progress, or propose areas for
future study. We will also consider book and event reviews, as well as
contributions that depart from traditional academic formats. We
encourage all submissions to strategically mobilize critique to also
offer a productive contribution to both feminist politics and media
studies. Submissions must go beyond mere description in order to be
considered for publication in Commentary and Criticism.

Please submit contributions by 15 May 2016, via email to both Susan
Berridge ((Susan.Berridge /at/ stir.ac.uk) <mailto:(Susan.Berridge /at/ stir.ac.uk)>)
and Laura Portwood-Stacer ((lportwoodstacer /at/ gmail.com)
<mailto:(lportwoodstacer /at/ gmail.com)>). Questions and expressions of
interest can also be addressed to Drs. Berridge and Portwood-Stacer in
advance of the deadline.

Email submissions directly to both Susan Berridge and Laura
Portwood-Stacer, as submissions for Commentary and Criticism will not be
correctly processed if submitted through the main Feminist Media Studies
site.

Please be sure to follow the Feminist Media Studies style guide, which
