PhD Studentship The influence of populist parties in Europe on the
rhetoric and discursive strategies of established political parties:
Populist political communication going mainstream?
Loughborough University
Location:	Loughborough
Funding amount:	£14,057 PA
Hours:	Full Time
Closes:	15th February 2016
Reference:	GSRC2016CCC/SV
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship funded by the
Loughborough University Graduate School in conjunction with the
Universitys Communication, Culture and Citizenship Research Challenge
to start in October 2016. The project will be based in the Department of
Politics, History and International Relations at Loughborough University
working closely with the Department of Social Sciences.
Internationally renowned for its research excellence, the University has
a vibrant research student community of around 1200 students supported
by an £8 million annual investment. In the most recent Research
Excellence Framework (REF) every department was found to be undertaking
research that is internationally recognised, with many regarded as
world leading. Comfortably ranked in the top 20 of all major
university league tables, the University was awarded The Sunday Times
University of the Year 2008-2009 and was voted The Times Higher
Education Best Student Experience in England for six years running.
This project will examine how mainstream political parties across Europe
face electoral competition from populist challengers. While existing
studies have shown how the former have felt pressured to change the way
they position themselves, this project asks whether mainstream parties
have also adopted the stylistic elements associated with populist
parties. It will take a small-N comparative approach to look at changes
in party communications over time and across countries to understand the
processes involved and the extent of the changes. The student will be
expected to use a range of methods including: content analysis and
causal case studies methods.
The studentship is for three years and is intended to start in October
2016. The studentship provides a stipend of £14,057 per annum (current
15/16 rate) plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate for up to three years.
International (non EU) students may apply but will need to find the
difference in fees between those for a UK/EU and international
student themselves.
Students will normally need to hold, or expect to gain, at least a 2:1
degree (or equivalent) in communication (politics focused), politics or
political science. A relevant Masters degree and/or experience in one
or more of the following will be an advantage: communication studies,
political communication, politics or political science.
