“Religion and Media” Teaching Media Quarterly 3(3): Summer 2015
In one form or another, religion has always had a place in American media. Since September 11, however, religion has become intensified as a topic of discussion, exacerbated by the advent of social media like Facebook and Twitter. Various and polarized debates about Islam, the advent and popularity of the so-called New Atheists (e.g. Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris), increasingly publicized disputes over the status of LGBTQIA persons within faith communities, not to mention the ongoing presence of religious themes and practices in popular film and television (e.g. The Tree of Life, Gravity, The Theory of Everything, Battlestar Galactica, Big Love, Sister Wives, Supernatural)—all of these are examples of religion in media and invite pedagogical reflection and methods for helping students to recognize and think through these and related phenomena.

Teaching Media Quarterly seeks materials to be used in the classroom that critically investigate the diverse nexus of religion and media. “Religion” is understood to refer to both historical traditions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc.) and the philosophical issues commonly associated with them (the question of God, the supernatural, life after death, other faiths, the efficacy of prayer, etc.). In keeping with the critical interests of this journal, the intersection of religion with myriad forms of exclusion is paramount, so proposals that attend to religion and media in the context of class, race, gender, sexuality, nationality, and ability are desired. Particularly, we are interested in lessons that address the following:

* How do questions of class, race, gender, sexuality, nationality, and ability emerge in media narratives and rhetoric about religion? * How do representations of religious persons, traditions, and themes in media articulate struggles over competing cultural values and political and economic imperatives? * How have convergence culture and social media helped to reinvigorate religious discourse? * How do political economy, environmentalist concerns, and/or media labor inform the various points of intersection between religion and media? * How do media about religion become sites at which good citizenship is constructed and cultivated?


Teaching Media Quarterly Submission Guidelines & Review Policy All submissions must include: 1) a title, 2) an overview and comprehensive rationale (using accessible language explain the purpose of the assignment(s), define key terms, and situate in relevant literature) (250-500 words), 3) a general timeline, 4) a detailed lesson plan and assignment instructions, 5) teaching materials (handouts, rubrics, discussion prompts, viewing guides, etc.), 6) a full bibliography of readings, links, and/or media examples, and 7) a short biography (100-150 words).

Please email all submissions using the TMQ.Submission.Template (1) (.docx) in ONE Microsoft Word document (toteachingmedia.contact /at/ gmail.com).

Review Policy
Submissions will be reviewed by each member of the editorial board. Editors will make acceptance decisions based on their vision for the issue and an assessment of contributions. It is the goal of Teaching Media Quarterly to notify submitters of the editors’ decisions within two weeks of submission receipt.Teaching Media Quarterly is dedicated to circulating practical and timely approaches to media concepts and topics from a variety of disciplinary and methodological perspectives. Our goal is to promote collaborative exchange of undergraduate teaching resources between media educators at higher education institutions.
