Media and Freedom of Speech. Controversies and Social Clashes
Call for Papers
Vilnius, 24-25th October 2013
Communication Faculty, Institute of Journalism, Vilnius University
The current economic crisis and austerity measures that were introduced
during the period accelerated major structural, technological,
professional and economic changes of mainstream media landscape. It also
challenged practices of journalism, public and political communication
and puts into question methodologies of media freedom measurement as
well as adequacy of current communication policies in securing Freedom
of Speech for all. The questions of how public communication has been
affected and what are consequences of the current changes for broader
social context and working democracies remain under-theorized.
We welcome submissions from media practitioners and scholars working in
media, communication, journalism and other social research fields.
Presentations based on empirical research and insights and on various
theoretical approaches are invited on topics such as:
- Media Economy and Freedom of Speech.
- Media self-regulation: does it work?
- Communication policy in Changing Media Landscape.
- Media Ideologies.
- Media and Public Policy Making.
- Measuring Media‘s Freedom. Critiques of Methodologies.
- Freedom of Speech and Self-Censorship.
- Limits of Freedom of Speech.
- Impact of Social Media on Changing Mainstream Discourses.
- Social Media, Freedom of Speech and Bullying.
- Media, Freedom of Speech and Whistleblowing.
- Freedom of Speech, Media and Propaganda.
Conference's language is English and Lithuanian. To register, please
send presentation title and an abstract of up to 500 words to the
following address: (IJMS-conf /at/ kf.vu.lt) by the 15 of September. No
registration or participation fee is required.

Ekonomine krize ir jos metu taikytos griežtos išlaidu ribojimo priemones
paspartino naujienu žiniasklaidos strukturinius, technologinius,
profesinius ir ekonominius pokycius. Mestas iššukis iprastiems
žurnalistikos kanonams, viešosios ir politines komunikacijos praktikoms.
Išryškejusios naujos tendencijos skatina ne tik praktiškai, bet ir
teoriškai nagrineti šiu pokyciu keliamas problemas: del žiniasklaidos
laisves vertinimo metodu, komunikacijos (visuomenes informavimo
politikos) adekvatumo, poveikio visuomenei ir žiniasklaidos sistemu
tipologijai.
Kvieciame žiniasklaidos praktikus bei mediju ir žurnalistikos tyrejus
registruoti pranešimus tokiomis temomis:
- Žiniasklaidos ekonomika ir žodžio laisve.
- Žiniasklaidos saviregiliacija: ar ji veikia?
- Komunikacijos (visuomenes informavimo) politika kintanciose
žiniasklaidos sistemose.
- Ideologijos žiniasklaidoje.

- Žodžio laisve, žiniasklaida ir propaganda.
Oficialios konferencijos kalbos yra lietuviu ir anglu. Prašome pranešimo
pavadinima ir santrauka (iki 500) žodžiu, pateikti elektroniniu paštu:
