Ecquid Novi: African Journalism Studies is calling for papers for a 
special issue to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of David 
Livingstone by looking at what his legacy might mean for African 
journalism and the way journalists represent that continent nowadays. 
Livingstone was perhaps one of the most popular national heroes of the 
late 19th century in Victorian Britain. An explorer and advocate of 
Africa, Livingstone's work and writings were responsible in part for 
shaping Western ideas about that continent and defining media discourses 
for many years afterwards. Although Livingstone critiqued dominant 
colonial practices, the image of Africa represented in his work and 
writings formed part of the civilizing discourse of colonialism that 
contributed to the construction of an African imaginary that remains 
contested in today's globalized media environment. In order to 
commemorate the anniversary of his birth, this special issue will look 
at the legacy of Livingstone for journalism in and about Africa today. 
Topics may include, but will not be limited to, Representations and 
Social Change in Africa, news media representations of Victorian Africa, 
contributions and influence of David Livingstone's work towards 
historical and contemporary journalism, images of Africa in contemporary 
global journalism. It will accept academic articles based on original 
research with a length between 5.000 and 7.000 words.

Ecquid Novi: African Journalism Studies is the premier peer-reviewed 
academic journal for journalism research in Africa. It is published 
three times a year by Routledge and UNISA Press, and is included in the 
Thomson Reuters Social Science Citation Index.
