Contemporary Greek Film Cultures 2013: an interdisciplinary, international conference
At the Hellenic Centre, London, 5-6 July 2013

CALL FOR PAPERS deadline: Monday 25th February 2013

At a time when news surrounding Greece has almost exclusively been about the financial crisis, it is imperative to redress the balance by examining the productive forces of culture in the country, maintaining that Greece is something more than a country in debt.

Greek filmmakers have accepted the challenge of the times and Greek Cinema has continued to flourish yet again within trying contexts. Contemporary Greek Film Cultures 2013 is an international conference for the study of Contemporary Greek Film, co-organised by the Universities of Reading and Glasgow, and hosted by the Hellenic Centre in London (http://www.helleniccentre.org). This 2-day conference seeks to actively help expand the current scholarship in Greek Film Studies, and help promote a more concerted study and theorisation of Contemporary Greek Cinema, reflecting on the multi-faceted contexts of production, distribution and research of Greek Cinema, in Greece and abroad. These discussions and reflections may be placed within, and extend the scope of, current studies in European and World Cinemas. Moreover, key objectives of the conference will be to help create, or further establish already existing research networks and working groups within Greek Film scholarship, and enhance collaborations among researchers. The aim is for this conference to become an open, international and interdisciplinary forum for the study of Greek Film, with the potential for annual or bi-annual meetings maintained subsequently at different institutions internationally.

Keynote speakers:
Ms Angeliki Antoniou, filmmaker
Ms Olga Malea, filmmaker
Dr Lydia Papadimitriou, Senior Lecturer in Film Studies at Liverpool John Moores University
