(MIRC), University of Leeds, in conjunction with the MeCCSA Race Network
and the ECREA Media Industries and Cultural Production Temporary Working
Group

Description

The conference explores issues of ‘race’ and the media in the West. The
papers will cover a wide range of issues on ‘race’ and ethnicity in
relation to the cultural industries, from the experience of creative
work, and cultural production, to the representation of multiculture in
the media. Subjects include British jazz and the Black Creative City,
the BBC and the politics of representation; racial struggles for work in
post-civil rights Hollywood, Islamophobia in the news media, and online
technologies, anti-racism and postcolonial communications.

Keynote speakers are

Tanika Gupta, MBE – award-winning playwright and screenwriter

Mykaell Riley – Director of the Centre for Black Music Research, and
ex-member of British reggae band Steel Pulse
