902 – Image and society: Visual anthropology and participative media in the Americas

Images
 play a central role in our culture and are grounded on a variety of
formats and forms of distribution, which in turn shape the way social
expressions like film, video, photography and digitally encoded media
are produced and consumed. At the same time, new forms of appropriation
of these media are generating new possibilities of expression and
knowledge construction. In this context, it seems necessary to
reconsider critically the use of media within the framework of social
sciences. The panel will strive to evaluate the use of both moving and
still images like film, video, or photography and digital media in the
Americas. Apart from the implications in the use of different image
support material, we are interested in the different forms of image
appropriation that occur during situations of intercultural dialog, from
 a methodological point of view within the anthropological and
visual-anthropological realm. Images have played an important role in

 the development of a “shared anthropology” that seek to deepen the
involvement of the “Other” in the research process, as well as in the
use of the outcome of research in social sciences. In the Americas
especially, there exists a long tradition of projects that use
audiovisual media for social, political and academic purposes.
Unfortunately, the interchange of ideas between the “socio-practical”
and the “scientific-theoretical” fields has, until now, not resulted in a
 coherent theoretical framework. We hope that the panel will be able to
foster dialogue with regard to the different approaches to
“participative media” and thereby contribute to the development of new
theoretical approaches towards shared processes of knowledge production.
 The wide spectrum we propose for this panel allows for the discussion
of thematic areas like: ethnographic film and anthropological research;
participative film and video; the relation between
 audiovisual
representation, culture, and otherness; exploration of new
symbolic-political global practices, evoked by means of contemporary
instruments of audiovisual production; communicational and collaborative
 practices within anthropological research. [translation of the

As
 imagens tem desempenhado um importante papel em nossa cultura hoje, a
partir de inúmeros formatos e formas de difusão, reconfigurando por sua
vez as formas de produção e de uso social de expressões como o cinema, o
 vídeo, a fotografia e outras baseadas em ambientes eletrônicos. Novas
formas de apropriação desses meios também vão conformando, por sua vez,
novas possibilidades de expressão e construção de conhecimentos. Nesse
contexto torna-se um empreendimento necessário refinar e construir um
balanço crítico dessas experiências, por meio do instrumental das
ciências sociais. Esta proposta visa articular um balanço de
experiências de utilização de imagens, em particular em suas formas em
movimento, como cinema e vídeo, como também em suas formas estáticas ou
eletrônicas. Para além do suporte, entretanto, nos interessa pensar nas
formas de apropriação de imagens que envolvam situações de diálogo entre
 diferentes
 culturas, a partir da discussão de perspectivas
teórico-metodológicas de pesquisas sobre essas experiências no campo da
imagem e antropologia e em particular da antropologia audiovisual. As
imagens tiveram um papel central no desenvolvimento de uma “antropologia
 compartilhada” que visa a melhor integração do “Outro” tanto no
processo de pesquisa, como na avaliação e utilização dos resultados da
investigação nas ciências sociais. Existe, especialmente nas Américas,
uma tradição bastante longa de projetos que se utilizam de meios
audiovisuais para fins sociais, políticos e acadêmicos. Lamentavelmente,
 a troca de experiências entre o campo “social-prático” e o campo
“científico-teórico” continua pouco explícita e, até hoje, não resultou
num corpo teórico coerente. Esperamos, neste sentido, que o GT consiga
colocar em diálogo as diferentes abordagens relativas à “mída
participativa”, contribuindo dessa forma
 para o desenvolvimento de
novos aportes teóricos para a compreensão de processos compartilhados de
 produção de conhecimento. O campo alargado que propomos para este GT
possibilita o desdobramento em algumas linhas temáticas como: filme
etnográfico e pesquisa antropológica; cinema e vídeo participativo; as
relações entre representações audiovisuais, cultura e alteridade;
análise de novas práticas simbólico-políticas globais construídas a
partir das novas ferramentas de analise e produção audiovisual
contemporâneas; práticas comunicativas e colaborativas e a pesquisa
antropológica.
