INTRODUCTION:*
Information technology (broadly defined) is playing an increasingly important role in the lives of labor organizations, their members, and their leadership. IT provides opportunities to expand the scope of communications, information-sharing, and analysis within and across labor unions. It gives members greater access to each other and to their unions. IT impacts the capacity of labor organizations to service their members, recruit new members among the ranks of the nonunion workforce, negotiate and administer contracts with employers, mold public opinion, and influence politics. Information technology is also important to how unions conduct their internal operations, including accounting and financial management, and govern themselves. Understanding the role and impact of IT in labor organizations is important in shedding light on how they cope with their internal and environmental challenges.
