Gender issues in Europe and Turkey:

reflections, questions and perspectives



Women make policy, run businesses, and work in areas from which they have long been excluded. As writers, painters and filmmakers, they are subjects of artistic expression. They give birth to children "if they want, when they want" and refuse to bow to dress codes imposed by authorities.



Women's millennial struggle for citizenship and for equality  has long been shunned by the official histories. Even though it has become more visible in the present era in which information flows without interruption, and led to the acquisition of some rights, the following question remain so far unanswered: Have women achieved their objectives? Neither in Europe nor in Turkey rape, violence, inequality of wages, political under-representation, and symbolic annihilation have disappeared.



The principle of non-discrimination plays a central role in the construction of the European legal space. Since the Treaty of Rome, the goal of equal pay for male and female workers has become a priority. Henceforth, the Charter of Fundamental Rights, which is incorporated into positive law by the  Lisbon Treaty, consecrates equality between men and women "in all areas" (art. 23).



Evidently, there is a lot to be done. Thus, legal experts continue to discuss the gap between formal rights and actual rights, economists and sociologists raise issues concerning employment or wage inequality. On a daily basis, women are still subjected to violence, and to multiple ways of discrimination in all the areas where the micro-powers prevail. Sexism is still an important component of the dominant media discourse, which heavily weighs on women's bodies. Their bodies are torn apart between motherhood and an idealized criterion of "beauty," which is scrupulously constructed in accordance with the needs of the cosmetics, dietary or cosmetic surgery markets. In the arts and creative industries women are subject to the forces of the market (that are not only economic but also symbolic) which are rarely favorable for them.



Does "sex" refer to biology and the anatomical differences or is it reducible to "gender" as social construction? Scholars working in different disciplines of social sciences have been questioning these issues for nearly half a century. Since  the 70s a new area of research has been instituted: gender studies. Gender studies produced various theoretical approaches, and contributed to social sciences and humanities with new paradigms.



These are the discussion themes of the 9th "European Days"  jointly organized by the CREDE (Centre for European Research and Documentation)  and the Research Group on Gender of MEDIAR (Centre for Media Studies), which is to be held in 20-21 October 2011, at Galatasaray University, Istanbul,Turkey .



Since gender issues constitute a field of research and reflection for all social sciences and humanities, the sessions will be, by definition, interdisciplinary.



The following topics are suggested, but the call for papers remains open to new proposals / contributions:



- Gender Relations, Gender and Sexualities: discrimination / exclusion

- Violence against women: sexual violence, domestic violence, mobbing etc.

- In the era of "post-..." what about feminisms?

- Full citizens? Women in the City

- Rights, laws and realities: what about equalities?

- Glass ceilings, steel barriers: employment and wages of women

- The scarf/veil, jeans, heels and the skirt: to be and to be seen in public space

- Families of yesterday and today: how far are we from the tyranny that weighed on our mothers?

- Representing, reproducing, making: gender, arts and media






Papers may be submitted in French or English

Author Guidelines:



1) Submitted abstracts  should be written in 12 pt Times New Roman font, 1.5 spaced on MS Word. (version 2007 or 2003). Paragraphs should be indented.



2) Abstracts of no more than 350 words and keywords written in  English and French should also be included. The abstracts should be structured in purpose, methods, results and conclusions.



3) Full names, titles, affiliations, and addresses of authors (including tel/fax and email) should be supplied on a separate cover page.



4) A short biography (not exceeding 150 words) including the institutional affiliation, the themes of research and last/main publications of each author, written in the third person both in French and English should be attached to the articles.



5) The accepted abstracts will be published in the conference book.



Full text papers:



1) Submitted articles should be written in 12 pt Times New Roman font, 1.5 spaced on MS Word(version 2007 or 2003). Paragraphs should be indented.



2) The articles they are published or not, are not sent back.



3) The full responsibility of the articles published belongs to the author(s).



4) Articles selected by the scientific board will be published in a collective book by an eminent publisher in France.



5) Copright of the articles published belongs to Galatasaray Universty.



6) No fee is paid to the author(s)



7) One copy of the collective book will be sent to the writers.

Bibliographical References



1) The references should be cited in the text and must include respectively the last name of the author, the date and the page mentioned (Alemdar 1998:122). For references to the same source, it is recommended to use the same method and avoid the terms such as « ibid ».

2) References within the text with two authors must include the last names of each (Alemdar and Erdoğan 2001:54). When there are more than two authors of an article, the first author's name is followed by the abbreviation « et al » (Alemdar et al. 1998: 32). References from several sources should be separated by a semicolon (Alemdar 1999:152 ; Oskay 1996:43).

3) The bibliography should include only the references cited in the text, listed in alphabetical order.

4) In the bibliography, references by the same author(s) should be listed in ascending chronological order. Several citations by one author in one year should be listed as "a, b, c", matching those in the text.
