Call for Workshop: Keywords: Continuities, complexities and
challenges in the field of Diaspora, Migration and Media

The 'Diaspora, Migration and the Media' section invites established
academics, young scholars, practitioners and postgraduate research
students who work with issues related to the broad field of the
section to submit abstracts (500 words) for proposals of
pre-organized panels, posters, individual papers, and art
exhibition/installation.
The scale and density of migration and migratory pathways, the
centrality of transnational networks to the lives of multitudes, and
the profound impact of ICTs on the experience and nature of migration
and transnational life has led to an intensive research focus on the
field of Diaspora, Migration and Media. The exploration of this in a
broad, European network has resulted in awareness and exchange on
conceptual, contextual and methodological issues, and a rich
disciplinary fusion. It has also led to the rapid global translation
and adaptation of such central theoretical frameworks as
'multiculturalism', 'transnationalism', 'diaspora' 'feminist theory',
'gender' 'postcolonialism' and 'queer'. The terrain of study is thus
both theoretically rich, but as a consequence, theoretically dense.
Across contexts and approaches, what kind of engagements are these
theoretical approaches preferring, shaping and, perhaps, limiting?
The aim of this conference is to assess the relevance, impact,
consequences and politics of the 'keywords' and theories currently
dominant in the field. To what extent are these ideas derived from
and translated into diverse scholarly contexts, and what are the
implications of these linguistic and cultural translations for the
object of study? What is 'gained' and what is 'lost' in a process of
European and frequently global exchange and translation through one
dominant language? What can we observe in the process of shifting
from and towards different theoretical paradigms? Has there, for
example, been a turn to theories of 'cosmopolitanism' and 'diversity'
and a move away from considerations of 'racism'? What are the
methodological consequences of the translation and particularisation
of key concepts?
For this conference in NUI Maynooth, Ireland, we are seeking critical papers that take on these overarching questions, on topics including but not limited to: theories  of media representation; patterns of audience and user engagement with media technologies; media policy; media politics; theories of diaspora, transnationalism, multiculturalism
and postcolonialism, questions of identity, gender, space and place,
diasporic film and other forms of arts.
Abstracts should be written in English and should contain a clear
outline of the argument, the theoretical framework, and where
applicable methodology and results. The length of the individual
abstracts is a maximum of 500 words. Panel proposals -which should
consist of five individual contributions- combine a panel abstract
with five individual abstracts, each of which are between of 500
words. For art exhibition/installations/film 500 words on aims and
description of the piece.

Participants may submit more than one proposal, but only one paper or poster by the same first author will be accepted and programmed.
First authors can still be second (or third, etc.) author of other
papers or posters, and can still act as chair or respondent of a panel.
