FEMINIST MEDIA STUDIES
Commentary and Criticism Call for Papers
We invite contributions for the Commentary and Criticism section of
Feminist Media Studies.
Potential contributors can write to co-editors,
Kaitlynn Mendes ((kmendes /at/ dmu.ac.uk)) and Kumarini
Silva ((k.silva /at/ neu.edu)) to express preliminary
interest. Final essays are due by 4th July 2011.
GENDER, MEDIA AND PARENTING
As the subject of thousands of books, videos,
seminars, websites, news and magazine articles,
parents have long sought advice on raising
children. From experts such as Dr. Spockâ??s
famous book Baby and Child (1946) to modern
websites such as mumsent.co.uk or parents.com,
the amount of parenting information is vast.
News of â??publicâ?? pregnancies and births are
also increasingly found in newspapers, magazines
and websites. In 2008, Spainâ??s newly appointed
(and seven month pregnant) defense minister
Carme Chacón made international headlines,
while in 2010 the births of Britainâ??s Prime
Minister David Cameronâ??s daughter, and
opposition Leader Ed Milibandâ??s son were also
hot news topics. Popular magazines such as the
USâ??s People even regularly include photos of
celebrity offspring. In addition, there is an
increaing rise in the public coverage?and
corresponding discoourse?of same-sex couplesâ?? adoptions.
In keeping with this, we are looking for short
essays (1500-2000 words) that engage with
various aspects of gender, media, and
parenting. Some questions that maybe useful to
engage with include, but are not limited to
asking who these stories are targeted towards?
What important messages about gender and gender
roles are embodied in such constructions? How do
men, women and feminists utilize mediated
information on parenting? How are different
types of parents (gay, lesbian, single,
divorced, married) represented in the press?

GENDER, ACTIVISM AND MEDIA
The twentieth and twenty-first centuries have
witnessed the rise of various forms of activism
from campaigns for universal suffrage, civvil
rights, an end to apartheid, support for gay,
lesbian, bisexual and transgendered members of
society, to the peace movements, the new left,
and more. More recently, the activism and
protests in Egypt, Tunisia, Lebanon, Sudan and
other Middle-Eastern nations has dominated
Western news coverage. But to what extent are
the mediations of such activities gendered?
Whose voices are prioritized, marginalized or
absent in such mediations? What feminist media
strategies are being employed to bring forth
social change? Such questions merit further
debate and we therefore invite contributors to
submit short essays (1500-2000 words) on various
aspects of gender, activism and media, past or
present, anywhere in the world. Essays can focus
on the mediation of particular social movements,
protests, campaigns, individuals or leaders.
