Bucharest, 19-21 November 2009
In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication Studies - FJSC, University of Bucharest, we invite researchers and communication professionals to an international conference in Bucharest to discuss the transformations that occurred in the media and communication landscapes after the fall of Communism, in 1989.

The Conferenceâ??s aim is to identify and discuss theoretical approaches and relevant case studies related to the transformations in journalism, public relations and advertising in the last two decades that may be useful in envisioning the future of journalism and other types of mass communication. The conferenceâ??s panels are organized around issues that can be approached in an interdisciplinary fashion (anthropology, sociology, social psychology, linguistics, media economics, cultural studies, semiotics, pedagogy, ethics, law, visual arts).

Papers are to be submitted for the following thematic panels:

Cultural industries, creative industries and new technologies ­ gueest speaker: Bernard Miège, Université Stendhal - Grenoble3, France. 20 years of education in mass communication: ­ guest speaker: Gerd G. Kopper, University of Dortmund, Germany.
Going digital ­ guest speaker: Pierre Moeglin, MSH Paris Nord, Frannce.
Public service and/or media business ­ guest speaker: Karol Jakubowwicz, UNESCO. Communicating politics ­ guest speaker: Peter Gross, University of Tennessee, USA. Public relations, corporate communication ­ only commercial communiication? ­ guest speaker: Alex Muchielli, Université Paul Valerry, Montpellier III, France. Media and public sphere - guest speaker: Peter Dahlgren, University of Lund, Sweden.
Popular culture, folklore and media culture ­ Pierre Mory, IHECS, BBelgium.
Abstracts (300 words) should be submitted using the enclosed form in English or French (the official languages of the conference) for peer review by June 30, 2009. Acceptance will be announced by September 15. The deadline for final papers is October 15, 2009. Please send your paper proposal by email to (mcoman /at/ fjsc.ro) before June 30, 2009. You will be informed about the scientific committee decision regarding your abstract via email.

Selected papers will be published in English and French in a special issue of THE ROMANIAN REVIEW OF JOURNALISM AND COMMUNICATION, edited by the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication Studies, University of Bucharest and the Ars Docendi Editorial House, and in a book dedicated to the transformations the communication industries witnessed after the fall of Communism.

This is a no fee conference. FJSC will provide accommodation in Bucharest for all guest speakers and for a limited number of participants.
