Full Professor Language and Communication
Voor 1.0 fte
Vacaturenummer 17284
VU onderdeel: Extern
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is a leading, innovative and growing
university that is at the heart of society and actively contributes to
new developments in teaching and research. Our university has ten
faculties which span a wide range of disciplines, as well as several
institutes, foundations, research centres, and support services. Its
campus is located in the fastest-growing economic region in the
Netherlands (the Zuidas district of Amsterdam), and provides work for
over 4,500 staff and scientific education for more than 23,000 students.
The Faculty of Humanities (FGW) connects scholarly topics, such as
history, philosophy, and language, that centre on societal relevant
issues and innovation. This way, scholars as well as students seek to
actively connect with the rest of society, being involved in innovative
education, interdisciplinary research and knowledge valorization. FGW
offers Bachelors’ and Masters’ programs in Dutch and English, and its
Graduate School of Humanities Research Master’s programs and PhD
trajectories in English. With about 1300 current students, FGW employs
275 people.
Within FGW’s Department of Language, Literature, and Communication, the
chair of Language and Communication plays a vital role by studying the
interplay between language, interaction and communication. The chair of
Language and Communication investigates the design of texts, images, and
conversations, in particular the consequences of designs for
participants and media users (consumers, television viewers, voters,
internet users). Although methodological approaches may differ -- from
critical discourse analysis to psycholinguistic experiments --, the
notion of genre serves as an overarching framework: research is aimed at
genre conventions, new genres, and genre expectations. This framework is
eminently suited for investigating social media, the chair’s most
preferred specialty. If possible, his or her research is applied to
relevant domains, such as Health Communication. For the leadership of
the chair of Language and Communication, FWG offers a position as full
professor starting per 1 April 2018.
