CALL FOR PAPERS

Winter symposium “Everyday moods, affects and attunements”

Estonian Literary Museum & University of Tartu
Tartu, Estonia, 7-9 March 2014

Invited speakers: Ben Highmore and Jonathan Flatley

The last decade has witnessed a shift of academic interest from the individual or collective subject toward emotional states, moods, and affects. This symposium will explore the role of moods, affects and attunements in everyday life.

The symposium “Everyday moods, affects and attunements” invites abstracts for papers addressing different problems in the sphere of the everyday, including (but not restricted to) natural and built environments, entertainment and consumer culture, everyday human relations. We welcome literary, filmic, and artistic analyses, phenomenological exploration, and philosophical reflection, as well as other approaches from the human sciences.

Please send abstracts (300-500 words) to the coordinator of the symposium, Epp Annus, by 15 Nov 2013 ((epp.annus /at/ gmail.com)). If you wish to participate without giving a paper, kindly send a short (150-300 word) description of yourself and your interests, also by 15 Nov 2013.

The participation fee is €60; for students and unemployed €40.

This is the third symposium organized by the research circle Heterologies of the Everyday, which is part of the Nordic Summer University network. This circle aims to address what is most relevant and unavoidably present for every human being: everyday existence. We analyse the experience of the everyday in its developments from the post-WWII period to the present era. This is an interdisciplinary project that works at the intersection of cultural studies, philosophy, literary criticism, art criticism, film studies, urban studies, anthropology, and human geography.

The Nordic Summer University contributes towards the travel and accommodation costs of participants from the Nordic and Baltic countries, but the exact amount of the financial support depends on the number of participants.

The symposium is organized in collaboration with the Estonian Graduate School of Culture Studies and Arts (supported by European Social Fund).
