INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
ON
INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION

CALL FOR PAPERS
Dear friends and colleagues,

The IMS Noida and the SJMC is jointly organizing an International Conference on Intercultural Communication in September, 2009.

The Institute of Management Studies (popularly known as IMS-Noida) is a premier management education institution, ranked top among the upper 50 business schools in India, is pleased to inform you that it is going to hold an international conference on 'Intercultural Communication' between September 3rd to 5th, 2009 at its campus.

PRESENTATION OF TOPIC

The globalization and privatization had brought a number of dramatic changes in the otherwise conservative cultures and traditional societies world over in the last one decade. The working styles and the business culture have created an impact on their living styles. The 24x7 work culture had brought in their fold a number of new waves in their cultures breaking the traditional barriers in respect of family traditions and relationships. A larger part of the major change in all spheres is due to the fast growing media, which is also a consequence of globalization and privatization. The increasing TV and cable networks, multiplicity of networking channels, FM Radios, internet and mobile technologies, besides the market driven journalism being pursued by the print media -- all together have intertwined the fabrics of society into a new culture. The native and traditional cultures of third world countries are thus undergoing radical changes at a faster pace than ever.

Even, India a country with a bewildering diversity in culture, yet representing â??unity in diversityâ?? over centuries could not escape the onslaught of alien cultures. The traditional societies and life styles in India have begun to change. This change has become more perceptible than ever in the past up to the grass roots?villages?level. If one understands cultures is in the widest sense of the word as the whole conflicting way of living, knowing and acting of a major group of people, then they are communicatively mediated. Through the media people in any society become socialized within the cultures, and degree of socialization is often expressed through communication itself. Most of the times, these processes of change occur increasingly via technical ties of media, beginning with newspapers and journals, through television, radio and film up to the so-called hybrid media of computers and mobile phones. The studies on intercultural communication are therefore becoming very interesting and of importance. Against this backdrop, the conference on intercultural communication will provide a platform to discuss the socio-cultural changes expressed in terms of communication.

Research proposals in the form of abstracts followed by the full papers after the peer review and notification of selected abstracts are invited from the scholars world over interested in sharing the impact of globalization on the native cultures of developed and developing countries across the globe. The proposals are welcome from any part of the world throwing light on the fall out of globalization on the cultures which include life styles, business styles and working styles in communication.

The proposals must be attempting to describe the cultural changes in any society within the ambit of media and communication studies theoretically and empirically. Secondly, the subject of the conference is to reflect how change can be described adequately and also how it can be operationalised. Third, the conference addresses the question of the significance of research on media cultures for the theoretical development of media and communication studies.
