This study proposes a ‘bottom-up’, micro-sociological analysis of cultural production. This article reassesses Georg Simmel’s theory of fashion. Stressing on the importance of the principles of: generalization and differentiation that for Simmel, guided the change cycle of fashion. Examining these two principles within this article the author also shows that Simmel’s classification should be changed by taking in to consideration a third trend: chic anti-fashion.

In this exploratory study, the hoodie was used as a vehicle to investigate and illuminate how meanings are produced and perceived. According to the findings of this study, the choice to wear a hoodie can be based solely on such comfort factors as warmth and breathability, but it may also be intended to manifest an individual’s choice or taste.
