[Commlist] CFP - International Conference - Galatea awakens. Artificial and Metamorphic Female Bodies in Contemporary Audiovisual Media
Fri Nov 28 09:13:41 GMT 2025
Teresa Sorolla, Maria Medina-Vicent, and Antonio Loriguillo are writing
to share with you the call for papers for the International Conference
“Galatea awakens. Artificial and Metamorphic Female Bodies in
Contemporary Audiovisual Media,*”* which will take place from 6-8 May
2026, at the Universitat Jaume I (Castelló, Spain).
In their website
(https://www.culturavisual.uji.es/mujeresartificiales/i-congreso-internacional/
<https://www.culturavisual.uji.es/mujeresartificiales/i-congreso-internacional/>)
you will find a detailed presentation of the conference and all relevant
information. The submission of paper proposals, which must be sent
through the form provided on the website, is open until 9th February
2026. Although the conference will be held mainly in Spanish,
presentations in English are more than welcome.
This conference focuses on metamorphic female characters and rebellious
Galateas who not only live but awaken: they question the power relations
to which they are subjected and their own identities, resist violation,
resignify and/or reclaim their monstrosity, pursue revenge or
emancipatory escape, or take control of their own narratives.
The thematic lines of the conference include:
• The representation of artificial, metamorphic, or monstrous female
bodies in contemporary audiovisual media.
• Dolls, mannequins, sculptures, AIs, or gynoids that are self-aware
and/or rebellious.
• Gothic legacies and intertexts across literature, painting, and
cinema: reinterpretations of artificial, resurrected, vampiric,
/doppelgänger/, and /mad doctor/ female creatures.
• LGBTIQ+ readings of artificial and metamorphic female bodies and
body horror.
• Self-imposed mutations of the female body.
• Technofeminist genealogies, xenofeminism, and the technological
reappropriation of the feminine in contemporary audiovisual media.
• Accelerationist readings of contemporary Galateas.
• The posthuman identity of artificial intelligences.
