*Call for proposals*
*Men Behaving Badly: Masculinity in British Situation Comedies*
Proposals are warmly invited for a new edited collection looking at the
representation of masculinity in British television situation comedies.
The British sitcom has both celebrated and critiqued male identity,
frequently focusing on failure and the frustrations of assigned gender
roles. Changing images of masculinity can been mapped against a shifting
society moving from the swinging sixties to the present day. Memorable
characterisations have attracted mass audiences from Hancock to Basil
Fawlty and Del Boy Trotter to Captain Blackadder, whilst innovation and
experimentation with the form has collided with stereotypes of
sexuality, class and ethnicity. Proposals might look at specific
programs, performers or series, or might range over the history of
situation comedy in Britain. Any period can be covered.
Proposals might cover any of the following areas but are certainly not
limited to these:
Male stardom
Gay and queer representations
Theoretical frameworks and methodologies
Stereotyping
Historically focused studies
Non-binary approaches and trans identities
Crossover between television and other cultural forms
Consideration of formats
Audiences
Intersections with class, ethnicity, race and sexuality
Please email a Word document of no more than 250 words outlining your
proposal and a short biog to: Dr Steven Gerrard
((_s.d.gerrard /at/ leedsbeckett.ac.uk)
<mailto:(s.d.gerrard /at/ leedsbeckett.ac.uk)>_) and Professor Robert Shail
