*Call for book chapters: *We welcome proposals for book chapters in 
*“Feminist activism in the digital era: Cultural perspectives”*, an 
edited volume to be published by Cambridge Books Publishing in 2024.

*About the Book:*

Feminism and digital media are rapidly evolving fields that intersect in 
complex ways. As the Internet and social media platforms become 
ubiquitous, feminist activists, scholars and artists are leveraging 
these tools to advance their goals and vision for gender equality.

Digital feminist activism involves using digital technologies and 
platforms to advocate for gender equality and to challenge patriarchy 
and systems of oppression that perpetuate gender inequality. Digital 
media serve as counter public spheres and solidarity networks where 
women can connect and learn from one another while also challenging 
gender norms and breaking taboos. Digital feminist activism includes 
new, creative, affective, performative tactics such as hashtag 
campaigns, online petitions, digital storytelling, data activism, video 
activism etc. Social media allows women to interact with feminist 
movements, exchange ideas, and develop new resistance practices.

However, the affordances of digital media are limited by several 
factors: the rise of antifeminist groups and misogynist culture on 
social media, the dominance of algorithms limiting feminist movements’ 
visibility on digital platforms, digital gender gap, temporality of 
online communication that favors political participation based on weak 
affinities and strong emotions (Barassi, 2015:148-149), digilantism etc.

This book brings together chapters that explore the impact of digital 
media on feminism across various countries and cultures. The book 
chapters will analyze digital feminist activism in the context of a 
specific country, looking at the impact of cultural and social norms, 
political regimes, and the colonial past of these countries on digital 
media and feminist activism as well as the relationship with global 
feminist movements.

*Scope and topics:*

We invite contributions from scholars, activists, and practitioners 
working on feminism and digital activism from a variety of perspectives 
and disciplines.

Book chapters may include these topics, but are not limited to:

-Feminist activism on social media

-Feminist blogs, podcasts, and online communities

-Digital storytelling as a feminist practice

- Media-making by feminist artists and filmmakers

-Cyberfeminism and hacktivism

- Online harassment

- Feminist pedagogy and digital media

- Digital gender gap

- Feminist approaches to digital media policy and governance

- Digital feminist activism and digital labour

- Digital media and intersectionality (race, class, sexuality, ability, 
etc.)

We welcome submissions from authors representing diverse geographic, 
disciplinary, and methodological backgrounds. No payment from the 
authors will be required

*Abstract:*

Abstracts can be submitted as either a Word or PDF.

* Title format:*

“yourname_Abstract” and should include:

• Title/Subject

• Author’s name

• Affiliation (university, independent, etc.)

• Contact details

• Abstract (max. 500 words)

• 5-8 keywords

*Full chapters:*

• Chapter manuscript - 6,000-10,000 words

Short bios pf the editors:

Assoc. Prof. Aslı Kotaman:

She graduated from Marmara University Journalism and received her M.A. 
degree from Media Economy Department. She completed Communication

Sciences Ph.D. programme at Marmara University with her thesis, entitled 
“Mental Collections, From Yeşilçam Period to Tele-Novelas the Flow of 
The Narration” from Tv and Cinema Department. She received her associate 
professorship from Cinema Studies. She is now working at the University 
of Bonn as a research fellow. Over the past 15 years she has been 
working on women’s cinema, gender inequalities in films, representations 
of the gender in films as well as video activism. She has several 
publications, edited volumes and conference proceedings in these subjects.

Assoc. Prof. Gülüm Şener:

She graduated from Galatasaray University, and she received her M.A. degree

from Stendhal University-Grenoble III. In 2006, she completed Communication

Sciences Ph.D. programme at Marmara University with her thesis, entitled 
“New

Public Sphere of Global Capitalism: The Use of the Internet by New Social

Movements”. Over the last 15 years, she’s been teaching communication and

media studies at various universities. Between 2019-2020, Şener conducted a

research, entitled &quot;Digital Feminist Activism in Turkey&quot;, as a 
Visiting Fellow at

the Media and Communication Department of the London School of Economics

(LSE). She has several publications, including editing books on digital 
activism,

video activism, social media and digital gender-based violence. 
Currently, she is an

associate professor at the New Media Department of 15 November Cyprus

University.
